The Myth of a National Unity

When Charles de Gaulle was dismissive of his people for not accepting his "certain idea of France" he made the humorous but telling remark "a nation of 360 cheeses cannot be governed"
and that was when France had a population of 40 million. The U.S. population is 295,734,134.
Add the disparate factors of religion, race, class, economics, and education. We refuse even to agree that we should be united by one language. At the outset of the American Revolution, one-
third of the colonists believed it to be a sin against God and a treasonable act to revolt against an
anointed King. Another third said "Start the the revolution without me". Even in the Second World War, many people opted to work in defence plants, make big bucks, and be exempt from
military service. We have always been a nation of tribes and reservations, and we like it that way. Most of us don't even get along with members of our own family, so I'll not ask when was the last time you had an enthic diversity dinner at your house. And whose defending us in Iraq?
A cross section of American youth? How about the sons and daughters of the working class playing Russian roulette for college tuition funds? I firmly believe every American should read
"The Collapse Of The Third Republic" by William L. Shirer It is the story of a once great nation
and people who came to hate one another more than their external enemy.
God Bless America? let us never do anything that would give the Almighty a moments hesitation of a doubt for such a sublime benediction.
